Introduction to Freud's psychoanalytic accounts of the unconscious. How various gaps in consciousness explain symptoms, psychological disorders and dreams. Freud's account of the unconscious and its relevance to theories of subjectivity, feminist theory and antiracist theory, expanding subjectivity to include otherwise marginalized or oppressed social groups. How Freud's writings have been taken up by other leading intellectual figures, including Lacan, Irigaray, Kristeva, Derrida, and Deleuze and Guattari. Instructor: Grosz
